Tennis: Mountaineers Set to Travel to New Orleans

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team is set to travel to New Orleans to take on New Orleans in a 5 p.m. match on Wednesday, March 18, at the University Tennis Center.
The Mountaineers are 6-11, 2-2 BIG EAST, after a 1-2 showing last weekend at the Ridgeview Racquet Club with losses to Idaho (4-3) and Army (5-2), and a victory over conference foe Villanova (7-0).
Junior Stephanie LaFortune led the Mountaineers with an overall 4-2 record, including a 2-1 showing in singles play, while junior Olga Elkin also posted a 2-1 weekend in singles.
The Mountaineers have captured the doubles point 10 out of 17 matches this season. The duo of Elkin and freshman Veronica Cardenas lead the Mountaineers with a 13-2 record on the season.
The Privateers (7-4) have won seven of their last nine matches. In their last match, New Orleans fell in a 6-1 decision to Illinois State as Cassandra Escobar won the lone singles' match over Franziska Steinhardt, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play, Escobar and partner Kozue Matsumoto have won eight straight matches and have posted a 9-2 mark this season. Wednesday’s match will mark the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and Privateers.
After their match with New Orleans, the Mountaineers will then travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a three-match weekend at Southern Miss.
