MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team (5-10) fell, 4-3, to Idaho this evening at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“It was a disappointing loss,” Coach Marc Walters says. “We had a really tough week with girls having exams, and we had a flu bug that went through our team and messed up our lineup. I was hoping since we were at home that we would get back on a roll, we were very close.”
The Mountaineers showed their toughness in several spots as junior Stephanie LaFortune defeated Alexandra Ulesanu 6-5, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot, while Gabriela Blaskovicova overcame Yvette Ly 6-3, 7-6 (5) at the No. 5 spot.
Freshman Milica Pantovic also stepped up to post a huge win, as she defeated Jana Siwa 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles play, Pantovic and LaFortune saw the lone victory with an 8-5 win over Barbra Maciocha and Siwa, at the No. 3 spot.
The Mountaineers are set to return to action with a 3 p.m. against BIG EAST foe Villanova tomorrow at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. WVU will close the weekend with a 10 a.m match on Sunday, March 15, against Army.
“We have to come back tomorrow and play Villanova hard,” Walters says. “We need that win for BIG EAST and as well as getting our team back on a roll to come out Sunday and play another hard match.”
