Tennis: Mountaineers Return to Home Play

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team is set to return to home play with three matches this weekend. The Mountaineers play host to Idaho at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13, Villanova at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, and Army at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 14, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers are 5-9 overall this season after falling to Maryland (7-0) and Brown (6-1) last weekend. Freshman Veronica Cardenas captured the lone victory for the Mountaineers, as she defeated Brown’s Julie Flanzer, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 singles spot. The win gives Cardenas an 8-5 record on the season.
The Vandals are 8-4 after sweeping Montana, 7-0, for their fifth-straight win on the season. Junior Maria Perevoshchikova is 5-3 for the Vandals at the No. 1 spot, as she came from behind to defeat Liz Walker 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the victory. This will serve asthe first-ever meeting between the Vandals and Mountaineers.
The Wildcats (0-5) are looking for their first win of the season as they fell to Point Loma Nazarene (5-4) and California Baptist (9-0) last weekend. The Mountaineers own a 7-0-0 advantage in the all-time series record after defeating the Wildcats 7-0 last season in Villanova, Pa.
The Cadets are on a nine-match winning streak after sweeping Colgate (7-0) and defeating Marist, 5-2, last weekend. For her efforts in posting a 6-0 record over the weekend, sophomore Anne Houghton was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. This will mark the Mountaineers first-ever regular season meeting with the Cadets.
