MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men’s soccer coach Marlon LeBlanc announced the team’s spring schedule today. The Mountaineers will play three home games at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium and one contest on the road.
"It's a nice little spring schedule we put together for the guys - the returning players and especially for the guys who missed last season due to injury,” LeBlanc said. “We think it's going to help them get their legs back under them and certainly help us in our preparations for the fall.”
WVU will open the season with a game against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. The Riverhounds are a professional soccer club in Pittsburgh, Pa., and are a member of the United Soccer Leagues.
Three days later on April 11, the Mountaineers will hit the road for a game at American, in Washington, D.C. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Reeves Field. The Eagles finished the 2008 campaign with a 9-8-2 overall record and reached the semifinals of the Patriot League.
After a week off, WVU will return home for its final two spring contests. Both games will take place at Dick Dlesk.
"The goal of this spring is to settle into a formation and to give guys like Chase Dewese, Nick Claudio and Connor Gorman, who are all coming back from surgery, an opportunity to play,” LeBlanc added.
In their first game, the squad will play host to Virginia Military Institute on April 18, a member of the Big South. The Mountaineers contest with the Keydets will serve as VMI’s final spring game. Action will begin at 3 p.m.
WVU wraps up its spring slate with a tough contest against Slippery Rock the next day. The Rock finished the season with a 14-7-1 overall mark and reached the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional final, but lost 1-0. The team was led by Jeremy Deighton, who tallied 16 goals in the fall.
