MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior gymnast Mehgan Morris has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week. It is the fourth honor for the Mountaineer captain, and second in consecutive weeks.
A Belle, W.Va., native, Morris earns the honor following a personal best 39.500 outing in WVU’s 196.225-195.925 loss to then-No. 19 Penn State on March 8. Sunday’s score is the second straight career-high for Morris; she previously scored 39.475 points in the Mountaineers’ win over Kentucky on March 1.
Morris placed on each event, including her all-around and bars victories. She finished first on the bars with a season high 9.925 points, 0.025 points short of her career-best mark.
The WVU co-captain tied for second on the beam and the floor with respective 9.800 and 9.925 scores. Additionally, Morris finished third on the vault with a career high 9.850 points, marking the third-straight week she has earned a career best vault score.
Through 48 career meets, Morris totals 1,467.300 points and continues to rank No. 16 on the WVU career point list.
Morris shared last week’s EAGL Gymnast of the Week honor with North Carolina’s Christine Nguyen. She previously earned the honor on Jan. 12 and Feb. 16. Morris leads the league with four honors this season. Only NC State’s Brooke Barr has won more awards, as she has been named EAGL Rookie of the Week five times.
This is the sixth conference award this season for the Mountaineers. Sophomore Amy Bieski was previously named EAGL Specialist of the Week on Jan. 19, and EAGL Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 26. NC State leads all conference teams with nine season awards.
The Mountaineers (8-7 overall, 4-1 EAGL) conclude their regular season this week with a meet at No. 21 Iowa State on Friday, March 13, at 8 p.m. EST.
