MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Pitcher Jarryd Summers of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, announced today by the BIG EAST Conference.
The sophomore right-hander from Sharpsville, Pa., is recognized for his efforts in WVU’s 19-0 victory over New Jersey Tech in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7. Summers pitched a complete game four-hitter against NJIT, striking out 10 batters including a stretch where he fanned five consecutive Highlanders.
Summers is 2-0 in his three starts on the season. He earned a season-opening victory over Indiana when he struck out nine Hoosiers in five innings pitched while giving up just one earned run. The 6-foot-5, 220 pound thrower carries a 3.24 ERA and has already struck out 20 batters in only 16.2 innings pitched.
Junior Vince Belnome was also recognized by the conference, getting named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The Coatesville, Pa., native went 12-for-15 overall last week with 12 RBIs, seven doubles and eight runs scored in WVU’s four-game sweep over NJIT.
Belnome’s feat gives the Mountaineers three consecutive honorees in as many weeks. Sophomore Jedd Gyorko and redshirt sophomore Grant Buckner were also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season.
