Varsity Sports: Miles Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va- Mountaineer women’s basketball player Sarah Miles has been named Athlete of the Week for her efforts last week as WVU went 1-1, falling to Seton Hall before defeating fifth-ranked Louisville.
Miles averaged 21 points, 7.5 rebounds, shot 55% from the field (16-29), shot 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line, averaged 37.5 minutes, three steals and two assists per game.
In the home loss to Seton Hall, Miles scored a game-high 20 points on 8-16 shooting with five rebounds and four steals.
Miles came back three days later in WVU’s 79-70 upset win at No. 5/10 Louisville, to score 22 points on 8-13 shooting and was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, with 10 rebounds. It marked her second career double-double and second of the season.
The win snapped Louisville’s 19-game home win streak.

*Both the swimming and diving teams, as well as the track and field team are preparing to compete in the BIG EAST Conference Championships slated to start on Feb. 19. The swimming and diving championships will take place in Indianapolis, Ind., from Feb. 19-21, while the track and field indoor championships will be held in New York, N.Y. on Feb. 21-22.
* The WVU women’s basketball team knocked off No. 5 Louisville on Saturday, Feb. 7. The win against Louisville marks the second consecutive year West Virginia has knocked off a top 5-ranked team.

West Virginia (13-9, 2-7) will play at home on Tuesday night against Providence … the game will be televised statewide on WVPBS … WVU will then travel to Marquette on Sunday, Feb. 15, for a 2 p.m. tip … the game will be televised on ESPNU.

The Mountaineers went 1-1 last week against two BIG EAST foes … WVU fell to Seton Hall, 55-47, on Wednesday evening at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers shot 29 percent (18-of-62) from the floor and made just 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) shots from outside the arc … Sarah Miles provided most of the offense in the second half, scoring 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting … Liz Repella, made it 19 of 21 games this season with double-figure scoring, adding 13 points with a 5-12 effort from the floor, including a 2-4 showing from beyond the 3-point line … Takisha Granberry contributed just four points but had a game best 10 rebounds for her fifth double figure rebound total this season.
The Mountaineers upset No. 5 Louisville on Saturday afternoon, 79-70 … Granberry sored 27 points while Miles added 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers … WVU went 13-of-18 from the free throw line in the second half with Ashley Powell hitting five key free throws late … Repella also came up big in the second half, scoring all 15 of her points after the break to go with 14 rebounds … Louisville (21-3, 8-2) shot just 36.6 percent for the game, including 23.5 percent from three-point marck ... the Mountaineers, meanwhile, hit 26 of 54 for 48.1 percent including 8 of 18 from 3 ... Granberry was 6 of 9 from behind the arc.

The win against Louisville marks the second consecutive year West Virginia has knocked off a top 5-ranked team ... last year the Mountaineers defeated No. 4 Rutgers 63-54 in Morgantown … UofL was also the highest ranked opponent the Mountaineers have ever defeated on the road in program history, and marked the 10th victory over a ranked opponent under Mike Carey’s eighth year tenure.

The Mountaineers had a strong showing at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup held at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in State College, Pa. ... in day one of the meet, sophomore Chelsea Carrier took first place in the 60-meter hurdles (8.58), the high jump (1.71-meters), the shot put (10.01-meters) and the long jump (5.73-meters), while finishing second in the 800-meter dash (2:21.59) to take the indoor pentathlon event … the mark is the third-best in WVU history behind Pat Itanyi (4,111) and Abbie Stechschulte (4,016) … the distance medley relay team of Kaylyn Christopher, April Rotilio, Karly Hamric and Keri Bland took first-place with a time of 11:11.33, the second-best time in WVU history ... the mark also set a new meet record and is an NCAA provision time.
In day two action, Bland took first place in the 800-meter with an NCAA provisional time of 2:06.74. Bland’s time is second in WVU indoor history behind Kate Vermeulen who set the record at 2:06.42 in 1999 … Rotilio took fifth place in the 200-meter dash (24.17), while Karly Hamric placed third in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:35.80 … the 4x400-relay team of Jordann Mitchell, Chelsea Carrier, Brittany Hohn and Rotilio took fifth place (3:48.97), while Kate Harrison placed fourth with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 9:45.62 in the 3,000-meter event … Mitchell ran a BIG EAST qualifying time of 58.22 in the 400-meter race … Katelyn Williams placed third followed by Natasha Redman who placed fourth in the jump, clearing 1.72-meters and 1.67-meters, respectively.

WVU tied Pitt, 15-15, at Fitzgerald Field House on Feb. 7 … fifth-year senior David Jauregui (ranked No. 19 at 149 pounds), redshirt-freshman Ryan Goodman (157), redshirt-junior Donnie Jones (165) and fifth-year senior Kurt Brenner (ranked No. 12 at 174 pounds) recorded wins to put the Mountaineers ahead, 12-9 … after dropping the next two matches, WVU was able to tie the score via fifth-year senior Dustin Rogers’ 3-2 decision over Zach Sheaffer at the heavyweight position.
