Cross Country: Spiker Big East Scholar Athlete

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University cross country and track and field athlete Alison Spiker has been selected as the 2008-09 BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete recipient, awarding her $2,000 toward graduate studies.
Spiker placed 17th at the ECAC Cross Country Championships in the fall and was the only senior on the squad that was ranked in the top 10 nationally by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
Spiker has already led the indoor track team’s distance medley relay team to a first-place finish at the Penn State Open and posted a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:57.90 in the 1000-meter at WVU’s State Farm Games.
A biology major, Spiker is also a BIG EAST Academic All-Star, a member of the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and the WVU Honors Program. The Ripley, W.Va., native plans to attend medical school upon graduation in May.
A winner is selected from each of the 16 BIG EAST schools with one overall male and female winner earning a $4,000 scholarship. UConn’s Jennifer Klienhans was named the BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year while USF’s Zak Boggs earned the men’s honor.
