Tennis: Mountaineers to Play Host to Syracuse

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis is set to play host to BIG EAST foe Syracuse at 4 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (1-3) went 1-1 last weekend as they defeated James Madison (4-3) and fell to Richmond (1-6) at the Greenbrier Hotel and Resort.
Junior Olga Elkin and freshman Veronica Cardenas led the Mountaineers in doubles play with a 2-0 record on the weekend, putting the duo at 4-0 on the season.
Cardenas also went undefeated in singles play to give her a 3-1 overall record at the No. 6 spot. Also capturing wins were Elkin who defeated the Duke’s Rebecca Erickson 6-3, 6-0, while sophomore Ashley Pilsbury captured a win in the No. 4 spot over Anna Khoor, with a score of 6-4, 7-5.
For the first time in eight seasons, the Orange has a 3-0 start, with victories over Colgate (7-0), Niagara (7-0) and Binghamton (6-1). Freshman Emily Harman leads Syracuse in the No. 1 singles position with a perfect 3-0 record, while also holding a 3-0 record with partner Alessondra Parra in doubles play.
In their last meeting in 2007, the Mountaineers captured a 5-2 win, in University Park, Pa., to earn their first-ever regular season victory over the Orange.
