Tennis: WVU Travels to Nebraska

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team is set to travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a 6 p.m. match against Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 28, and an 11:30 a.m. match against Iowa State on Sunday, March 1, at the Nebraska Tennis Center. All times are eastern.
The Mountaineers (5-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) are on a four match winning streak after defeating UMBC (5-2) and Charleston (8-1) last weekend at the Ridgeview Racquet Club. Sophomore Ashley Pilsbury led the team with a 2-0 record on the day. In singles, Pilsbury defeated Lauren Hamilton from UMBC (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 6 spot, and Neha Rana from Charleston (6-2, 6-2)in the No. 2 spot.
The Mountaineers continue to dominate in doubles play as they took the point for the sixth-straight time in both matches on Saturday. Junior Olga Elkin and partner, freshman Veronica Cardenas, led with a 2-0 record, as they defeated UMBC’s Emily Mannix and Barbara Couto, 8-0, and Charleston’s Alexa Kay and Sarah Monsheimer, 8-2, improving the duo’s season record to 10-0.
The Huskers are off to a 5-0 start this season, with recent wins over Eastern Michigan (7-0) and Colorado State (7-0), and have earned 34 out of 35 possible points this year.
Senior Ashley Finnegan is the most recent Husker to be ranked nationally, as she finished No. 118 in the latest ITA poll. Finnegan is 3-0 in the spring season and 7-0 overall. Freshman Mary Weatherholt also leads the Huskers with a perfect 5-0 record this spring and was ranked No. 94 in the polls on Jan. 6.
Iowa State is 4-2 this season, after defeating Syracuse 4-3 last weekend. Sophomore Liza Wischer led the team with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Syracuse’s Ashley Spicer for her sixth-straight victory this season.
Both matches this weekend will be first-time meetings for the Mountaineers.
