MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore shortstop Jedd Gyorko has been named to the first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the 2009 season.
The Morgantown, W.Va., native went 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles and a home run in WVU’s three-game swing at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Fla.
The Preseason All-BIG EAST selection also posted four RBIs and a .786 slugging percentage. His only home run came off Minnesota left-hander Luke Rasmussen in the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Gyorko had several other timely at-bats over the weekend, including an RBI double in the first inning against Indiana that set the tone for WVU’s 14-4 victory over the Hoosiers. He also went 2-for-5 with two RBIs against Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
Not counting in last week’s BIG EAST awards was WVU’s 10-5 victory over Northwestern on Monday. Gyorko went 3-for-5 with two doubles, giving him at least one extra base hit in all four games played this season.
