MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following consecutive 195.000-plus scores last week, the No.18 West Virginia University gymnastics team travels to No. 11 Oklahoma on Friday, Feb. 20, for a quad-meet with No. 13 Missouri and Brown. Competition is set to begin at 8 p.m. EST.
The Mountaineers (6-4 overall, 4-1 EAGL), competing in their final quad-meet of the regular season, enter the evening after nabbing a season high 195.650 score over Temple (191.625) at the WVU Coliseum on Feb. 15.
Prior to the victory over the Owls, the Mountaineers won at George Washington, 195.125-193.150, on Feb. 9.
The Sooners (3-3, 0-1 Big 12) defeated WVU twice last season and hold a 4-1 series advantage. The Mountaineers are ahead in the series with the Tigers (7-1, 1-1 Big 12), 2-1. The two squads have not met since 1994, with WVU earning the win, 187.825-183.425. WVU also holds a series advantage over the Bears (3-7, 2-5 ECAC), 2-0, last winning, 193.075-184.500, in 2007.
In its last outing, WVU dominated the Owls on each apparatus, including a 48.625-47.575 victory on the balance beam. The Mountaineers didn’t count a fall on the beam for the second-straight meet and were 0.200 points short of their season-best score (48.825).
Senior Mehgan Morris was strong against Temple, bouncing back from a shoulder injury and scoring 39.350 points to finish tops in the all-around. The Belle, W.Va., native finished first on the bars (9.850), the beam (9.775) and the floor (9.950), while also taking second on the vault (9.775). Morris’ bars, beam and floor scores were season highs. Additionally, her vault and floor scores matched career-highs.
Through 45 career meets, Morris has totaled 1,349.175 points and needs only 28.175 points to break into WVU’s career point list.
Junior Chelsi Tabor earned her fifth vault victory of the season against the Owls with a 9.850 score.
