WASHINGTON, D.C. - West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team fell at Georgetown, 79-73, in overtime Wednesday evening at McDonough arena. The loss snapped a four-game win streak against the Hoyas.
Georgetown (16-10, 6-7) outscored the Mountaineers 14-8 (14-11, 3-9) in the extra session, led by Jaleesa Butler’s five points to begin the overtime. Attrition took its toll on the Mountaineers as Ashley Powell, Liz Repella and Sarah Miles all fouled out in the overtime.
Repella missed a 3-pointer with five seconds left in regulation and a Takisha Granberry putback did not fall as time expired.
WVU took a 63-62 lead on a Granberry 3-pointer with 2:50 left in the game. Georgetown’s Shanice Fuller gave the Hoyas a one-point lead on a driving layup to make it 64-63. Repella hit two free throws with 29 seconds giving WVU a brief 65-64 lead. Fuller then made the second of two free throws to tie the game.
Granberry scored a career-best 31 points in the losing effort on 10 of 20 from the field, including 6 of 13 from the 3-point line. It marked her second 30-point game of the season. Repella added 19 points and nine rebounds.
