MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior Mehgan Morris has been named the EAGL Conference Gymnast of the Week. It is the second honor of the season for the Mountaineer captain.
A Belle, W.Va., native, Morris earns the award on the heels of her season-best performance in WVU’s 195.650-191.625 win over Temple on Feb. 15, in which she finished with 39.350 points, her top score of the year, and fell just 0.05 points short of her all-around career-high mark.
Morris took three individual firsts while comprising the top all-around score – bars (9.850), beam (9.775) and floor (9.950). The bars’ score matches a season high, the beam score sets a season-best mark and the floor point total matches both season- and career-highs. Additionally, Morris finished second on the vault with a season- and career-high score (9.775).
Morris’ point total is her first 39.000-plus score of the season and ninth overall. She now ranks ninth on the WVU career 39.000-plus all-around scores list.
With 1,349.175 career points, Morris needs 28.175 points to break on to the WVU career points record list.
WVU has earned four EAGL honors this season, as Morris was previously named Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 12, and sophomore Amy Bieski earned the award on Jan. 26. Bieski was also named Specialist of the Week on Jan. 19. Pitt matches WVU with four season honors, while NC State leads all conference teams with six.
The No. 18 Mountaineers (6-4 overall, 4-1 EAGL) return to the road this week, traveling to No. 11 Oklahoma on Friday, Feb. 20, for a quad meet with No. 13 Missouri and Brown. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT.
