Goldthorpe Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Jared Goldthorpe has been named WVU’s Athlete of the Week after his meet at the Ohio State Invitational.

The New South Wales, Australia, native took second place in the 500 free with a time of 4:22.13, an NCAA “B” cut time. His preliminary time of 4:21.62 set a school record. Goldthorpe also was on the opening leg of the 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams that placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Each relay team earned “B” cut times.

In more individual action, Goldthorpe placed second with a “B” cut time of 1:37.38 in the 200 free. He also placed second in the 100 back with another “B” cut time of 48.58. He then took home first place in his final event, the 200 back, with a school-record time of 1:44.03.

This Week in Women’s Basketball
West Virginia (7-1) plays host to two non-conference opponents this week at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers entertain Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m., and then take on Longwood on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m.

Last Week in Women’s Basketball
WVU went 2-0 last week, with two victories at home … WVU defeated Radford 64-28 on Dec. 2 … the Mountaineers shot 51 percent from the field and held the Highlanders to 16.7 percent, the second-lowest ever opponent shooting percentage … junior guard Liz Repella led all scorers with 13 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field … Sarah Miles recorded 12 points and was also 6-for-9 from the field and dished out a career-high nine assists … Korinne Campbell was the third Mountaineer in double-figures, nabbing 10 points on the strength of a 2-for-2 night from the 3-point line … Madina Ali controlled the boards, as she snared a game-best 10 rebounds, her first career double-figure rebounding game … up 31-16 at the half, the Mountaineers needed less than three minutes to push their lead to 21 points, as a Bussie free throw at 17:11 gave WVU a commanding 40-19 lead … the Mountaineers would end the game on a 24-9 run … WVU then defeated Maine 88-32, on Dec. 5, as five Mountaineers reached double figures in scoring and three set new career-bests … Ali set a new career high with 18 points on 6-7 shooting and 6-7 from the free throw line with eight rebounds … Bussie tied a career-best with 16 points, on 7-9 shooting, with eight rebounds … Campbell tallied 14 points on 5-8 shooting while Repella ran her double figure scoring streak to 12-straight games with 13 points … Miles recorded eight assists and six points, with a season-high six rebounds and five steals … WVU raced out to a 7-2 advantage in the game’s first two minutes and never looked back, hitting three of its first four shots, and forcing a Maine timeout with 18:15 left in the first half.

Notes and Quotes
The 56-point victory over Maine is the largest margin of victory for WVU since the Mountaineers defeated Mercyhurst last year by 50 at home.

This Week in Rifle
No. 1-ranked WVU has concluded the first half of its season … the team will resume regular-season action on Jan. 17 and play host to NC State at 8 a.m. at the WVU Rifle Range.

Last Week in Rifle
Five Mountaineers competed over the weekend at the 2009 USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championship at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. … sophomore Michael Kulbacki earned two junior titles and also finished in second place in the division on the final day … additionally, Kulbacki’s second-day score of 595 qualified him for the open men’s final, where he finished second with a score of 697.3 … junior Nicco Campriani shot the highest visitor score each day of the championship.

Notes and Quotes
The Mountaineers (6-0, 3-0 GARC) last defeated No. 2-ranked and GARC foe Kentucky, 4691-4642, on Nov. 21 at the WVU Rifle Range … the team score is believed to be the highest collegiate aggregate total since the NCAA implemented a 60-shot course at the onset of the 2004-05 season … the total is 14 shots better than WVU’s previous school record of 4677, set last year … with wins over the Wildcats in smallbore and air rifle, the Mountaineers remained undefeated in both disciplines … the Mountaineers are off to their best season start since 2003, when they opened the season 8-0 before finishing the year at 11-2.

This Week in Swimming & Diving
The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will train from Dec. 30-Jan. 8 when they travel to Cocoa Beach, Fla., for a winter training trip … there will be an opponent to be determined sometime during their stay.

Last Week in Swimming & Diving
This past weekend both teams swam at the Ohio State Invitational … the men placed third with 447 points behind first place OSU (1,424 points) and second place Minnesota (834 points) … the men also placed in front of BIG EAST rivals Notre Dame and Pitt, as well as Penn State … the women finished in third place with 529.5 points ... in front of them was Minnesota (1,174 points) in first and Ohio State (845 points) in second … the diving well also placed in front of Penn State, Miami and Pitt … Jared Goldthorpe had an excellent weekend placing first in the 200 back, second in the 200 free, second in the 500 free and second in the 200 back … all four races earned Goldthorpe NCAA “B” cut times … George Farquhar also recorded an individual “B” cut time with his fifth-place finish in the 200 breast … the 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams of Goldthorpe, Farquhar, Taylor Camp and Brad Eichenseer also recorded “B” times … for the women, Kayla Andrews led the way with first-place finishes and “B” cuts in the 50 free and 100 free … Morgan Callaway also recorded “B” cuts with her seventh-place finish in the 500 free and third-place finish in the 100 back … Rachael Burnett placed second in the 400 IM and fourth in the 500 free to also record two “B” cuts … Mandie Nugent finished the competition with a “B” cut time in her third-place finish in the 200 fly … the 200 free, 400 free and 800 free relay teams all finished the weekend with great success … the 200 free relay team of Shaunna Purtell, Sarah Kosmak, Stephanie Shupe and Andrews placed second with a “B” cut time … Robyn Matthews, Callaway, Purtell and Burnett placed third in the 800 free relay with another “B” cut time … in the final event, the 400 free relay team of Purtell, Callaway, Burnett and Andrews placed first with the final “B” cut time.

This Week in Track & Field
The West Virginia University track and field team is idle this week … the Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 9, as they host the WVU Invitational.

Last Week in Track & Field
The Mountaineers started the 2009-10 indoor season with a good showing at the WVU Holiday Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the WVU Shell Building … throughout the competition, six Mountaineers met BIG EAST qualifying standards, including sophomore long jumper Meghan Mock, who saw a first-place finish at 5.58-meters.

Seniors Marie-Louise Asselin, April Rotilio, Natasha Redman, junior Chelsea Carrier, Mock and freshman Sydney Cummings all garnered BIG EAST qualifying standards in their respective events … Rotilio led with a first-place finish in the 200-meter, as she posted a BIG EAST qualifying time of 24.98 … the Bellaire, Ohio, native also took first in the 55-meter with a time of 7.11, while Carrier followed in second with a time of 7.17 … Asselin posted a BIG EAST conference qualifying time in the 800-meter, with a first-place showing behind a time of 2:15.17 … in the high jump, Cummings made her debut clearing 1.71-meters for first place, while Redman finished second (1.68) … freshman Arielle Gaither also raced well, taking first in the 500-meter with a time of 1:21.63 … in the mile, WVU took the top three spots as senior Jaime Cokely finished in first (5:29.39) and sophomores Jennifer Sirockman and Lauren Moskal finished in second (5:30.03) and third (5:56.17), respectively … the 4x400-meter relay team of Rotilio, Gaither and juniors Carrier and Jordann Mitchell dominated competition with a first-place showing, running to a time of 3:56.40.

This Week in Wrestling
The West Virginia University wrestling team will play host to its first dual meet of the season on Friday, Dec. 11 … the squad will face No. 15-ranked Penn State in the WVU Coliseum at 8 p.m.

Last Week in Wrestling
Seven members of the WVU wrestling team competed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational from Dec. 4-5 … the Mountaineers took 28th out of the 42-team field.

Notes and Quotes
Redshirt sophomore Matt Ryan earned sixth place at 184 pounds … Ryan won five matches, three of which came by fall … his fastest pin was over New Mexico’s Mark Martinez in 1:14 … redshirt sophomore Ryan Goodman (157), redshirt senior Donnie Jones (165) and junior Brandon Williamson (HWT) all won two matches apiece at their respective weight classes … Jones scored a 24-9 technical fall over Drexel’s Alex Rinaldi … Jones registered 11 takedowns in the match … Williamson entered the tournament on a seven-match winning streak and extended it to nine, before falling to No. 3 seed Nathan Fernandez of Oklahoma … the Mountaineers had three wrestlers earn seeds at the tournament – Jones, a No. 4 seed, Williamson, a No. 6 seed, and redshirt senior Chance Litton, the seventh seed at 174 pounds.
