MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Veronica Hammersmith has announced the signing of two top-caliber athletes to the 2010 class.
Lisa Riedel (Werder, Germany/Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Sportschule) and Sidney Sauter (Woodridge, Ill./Naperville North High) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Mountaineers for the 2010 season.
“We have a very skilled group of players coming in next season and we are excited to have them,” coach Veronica Hammersmith says. “They have championship-type experience and have been in pressure situations which will give us a big advantage next year.”
Riedel, a 5-foot-9, setter, aided her high school team to win the High School World Championships in Croatia, where it defeated China in a five-set match. She also gained valuable experience playing with the youth national volleyball team of Germany.
“Lisa has played on the German National team and trained with them for a year, so she has some high level experience,” Hammersmith says. “We are looking forward to having the added depth in our setter position.”
Sauter, a 6-foot-1, rightside hitter, comes in as a member of the 1st Alliance Club team that won the 2009 Junior Volleyball Director’s Association National Championship in Louisville, Ky. In high school, she was named first team all-conference and was a 2009 Chicago Tribune Top 20 Players to watch, while also being a 2009 AVCA All-America nominee.
“Sidney’s club won the JVDA National Championship last summer and will play club ball this winter and get more experience,” Hammersmith says. “I think she is someone who we will train on the right side and see how she does. She will be a really big asset to us in the future.”
