Bill Stewart said he has no problem whatsoever being second fiddle to Florida State’s Bobby Bowden in the 2010 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl.
Stewart has been down this road plenty of times, beginning with his first game at West Virginia in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl against Bob Stoops’ third-ranked Oklahoma team.
“I have no problem being in the background to this great icon of college football,” Stewart said Monday. “The man coached me. He was the first collegiate coach I ever had. When Coach Bowden spoke he was such a gentleman and when he spoke to you as a kid you were in awe.
“To be second fiddle to a man like this? He’s my hero,” Stewart added.
Stewart says any success he has enjoyed at West Virginia is because of the outstanding coaching staff he has assembled and the dedicated and hard-working players he has recruited.
“I’ve got a great staff with great players that play hard,” he said. “I’m first to tell you the credit belongs to the men in the arena.”
