WVU Upends UMBC

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team made quick work of visiting UMBC and defeated the Retrievers, 79-45, this evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The win is the seventh-straight 20-plus point victory for WVU (11-1) and improved the Mountaineers’ series lead over UMBC (4-6) to 2-0. Additionally, the Mountaineers’ 11-1 start to the 2009-10 season is the best 12-game start in program history.
WVU padded its win from the 3-point line, shooting 8-for-24 (33.3 percent), including a 5-for-12 (41.7 percent) showing in the first half. UMBC went 0-for-10 from the behind the arc.
The Mountaineers were also dominate in the paint, outscoring the Retrievers, 36-26, and outrebounding them, 41-30. The rebounding advantage resulted in 23 WVU second-chance points.
Twenty-three Retriever turnovers were converted in to 28 points for the Mountaineers; UMBC only scored 12 points off of 15 WVU turnovers.
Junior forward Korinne Campbell led all scorers with a career-best 20 points. The Princeton, N.J., native shot 7-for-12 from the floor in 27 minutes of play.
Junior guard Liz Repella tallied 18 points on a 7-for-15 effort from the floor. The Steubenville, Ohio, native has scored in double-digits in all but one of WVU games this season.
Sophomore guard Sarah Miles and freshman center Asya Bussie each finished with 13 points. Bussie pulled down a game-best eight rebounds, while Miles dished out a game-best eight assists.
Up 42-16 at halftime, the Mountaineers continued to throttle the Retrievers’ defense in the second stanza, shooting 15-for-31 (48.4 percent) from the field.
The Mountaineers were hot out of the gate and built a 17-0 lead before the Retrievers scored their first basket. Campbell was key to WVU ‘s fast start as she scored 15 points, one less than the Retrievers managed all half. Equally important in building the lead was the Mountaineers’ defensive attack, as the squad swiped nine steals and held the Retrievers to 29.2 percent (7-for-24) from the field.
WVU breaks from action for eight days before hosting Santa Clara on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
