MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player Jedd Gyorko has been selected as a Louisville Slugger preseason second team All-American, announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The notable publication honored Gyorko, a junior, with second-team All-America honors after his sophomore campaign in 2009. The newspaper also named the Morgantown native a freshman All-American in 2008.
Through two seasons at West Virginia, Gyorko has put up unprecedented numbers. His career marks include a .415 batting average, 16 home runs, 121 RBIs, 191 base hits and 136 runs scored. The 2009 Brooks Wallace Award finalist has also been relatively low on strikeouts, fanning just once every 10 ½ plate appearances.
Louisville third baseman Phil Wunderlich was the other BIG EAST player to make the pre-season All-America list, earning third-team honors.
West Virginia begins its 2010 season at Coastal Carolina, ranked 17th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper pre-season poll, on Feb. 19. The matchup is part of the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, S.C., with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
