MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer player Heather Saffel has been named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar all-East region honorable mention selection.
Saffel, an Elkins, W.Va., native, started 15 of the last 16 matches in helping the Mountaineers reach the second round of the NCAA tournament. The exercise physiology major was part of a WVU defense that posted 13 shutouts on the season, tying a school record set in each of the past three seasons. Mountaineer defenses held 10 different opponents to two shots on-goal or less this season.
Saffel will forego her final year of eligibility to attend medical school. She was named a Strength and Conditioning Iron Mountaineer and is a member of the Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout her career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution; be in her second year at the current school if she is a transfer student; and submit an official copy of a certified transcript.
Saffel is the 11th different player in program history to earn NSCAA Scholar all-region honors.
