MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second consecutive season, junior Jedd Gyorko of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pro-Line Athletic Preseason All-America second team, announced today.
The heralded shortstop from Morgantown, W.Va. has been honored by the NCBWA on several occasions. Gyorko ended his freshman campaign in 2008 as an NCBWA freshman first-team All-American, and also earned second-team All-America honors from the organization. Prior to his sophomore season, he was named to the NCBWA preseason All-America second team, and finished as a third team All-American.
The NCBWA also tagged Gyorko as its District II Player of the Year last season, which included candidates from West Virginia, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
Last season, Gyorko batted .421 with eight home runs, 58 RBIs, a school-record 28 doubles and 96 base hits. He finished second in the NCAA in doubles, 17th in base hits, 19th with 1.35 runs per game, 21st in batting average and 28th with 74 runs scored.
Through his first two seasons, the Brooks Wallace Award finalist is already West Virginia’s top career hitter, showing a .415 batting average. He is seventh on the school’s all-time list with 45 doubles and tied for ninth with 61 multi-hit games.
Two other players from the Big East were named to one of the three NCBWA All-America teams. Sophomore outfielder George Springer of Connecticut made the NCBWA All-America second team, while junior designated hitter Phil Wunderlich of Louisville was named a third-team preseason All-American.
