MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University freshman center Asya Bussie has been named the BIG EAST Conference's Freshman of the Week.
The Randallstown, Md., native helped WVU win its sixth and seventh straight games last week with home wins over Eastern Kentucky and Longwood. In the 60-40 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 8, the freshman center notched a career-high 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field.
Against Longwood on Dec. 12, Bussie recorded seven points, five rebounds and a career-best four blocked shots. For the week, Bussie averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game, while shooting 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from the field.
Bussie is the first Mountaineer rookie to garner league freshman of the week accolades since Meg Bulger garnered the honor six times in 2004-05.
Bussie is currently second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per contest, tops in blocks with 14 and fourth in rebounding at 6.7 per game.
West Virginia returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m., when it takes on Fresno State at the WVU Coliseum. The game is a "Dairy Mart Dollar Night" as fans can visit any Morgantown-area Dairy Mart to pick up a coupon good for one dollar admission to the game.
