MORGANTOWN, W.Va.Throughout the WVU gymnastics team’s 2009 fall preseason, several Mountaineers will take the time out of their busy schedules to share stories of practice and preparation with the fans.
The first diary entry comes from junior Amy Bieski, the Mountaineers’ top returning point earner. A consistent all-around performer, Bieski returns for her third season with 969.55 career points. An eight-time all-EAGL performer, the Nanticoke, Pa., native will be looked upon in 2010 to lead the Mountaineers to another successful season.
Wow! Fall is here and preseason is flying by. We just completed our second week of official practice and I have to say the team is looking amazing. We are way ahead of where we were at this time last year.
We started to put our individual routines together last week. Everyone has already started to practice their competition vaults. Sophomore Tina Maloney, junior Emily Kerwin and senior Kiersten Spoerke have been doing remarkable vaults!
We also began practicing our bars routines. Everyone has been completing the assignments with ease.
As for beam and floor, we just started doing skill sets on beam, and middle/last pass floor routines. Many of the girls are upgrading and changing their routines. Each practice, they have been getting more consistent with the news changes.
The four freshmen have really stepped up to the plate so far, completing all of the assignments given to them. As we all know, the first couple weeks can be quite an adjustment for freshmen, but these girls have transitioned into college life very well! It’s great to see(newcomer) Chelsea Goldschrafe back in the gym working out. She came to school with mono, and was unable to practice the first couple weeks. She recently got cleared by the doctors to work out and she is doing fabulous!
This is the best the team has looked since I’ve been here! I really think the challenges our team faced during the offseason not only helped us physically, but also brought us closer together. Running the Coliseum stairs, Law School Hill and in the arboretum were all difficult challenges, but as a team, we helped push each other to the finish.
Our team chemistry is amazing and everyone is on board for a great 2010 season. We all want to achieve great things this year, and I’m so excited and ready to get back to competition!
Let’s go Mountaineers!
