MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team garnered its first Top 25 ranking this year, earning the No. 25 spot in Soccer America, the California-based publication announced today.
The Mountaineers improved to 5-2-2 overall and 4-1-0 in BIG EAST play after winning their fourth-straight match on Oct. 3, defeating Marquette, 1-0. Senior Jason Bristol tallied the lone score of the game in the 74th minute on a scramble inside the six-yard box.
With the victory, WVU is tied with Connecticut atop the BIG EAST Blue Division standings, as both teams hold identical records and 12 points apiece.
The last time the Mountaineers were ranked in Soccer America was in the final 2007 poll, where WVU held the No. 13 spot.
WVU returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Pitt. Kickoff at Valley Fields is set for 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers then continue league play on Friday, Oct. 9, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium as part of a men’s and women’s soccer double-header, presented by EZToUseBigBook.com. WVU plays host to No. 13-ranked Connecticut at 8 p.m., and the contest will be broadcast live nationally on Fox Soccer Channel. Friday night is “Dollar Night,” as all tickets and select concessions are just one dollar each.
