MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team finished its first competition of the year at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh, Pa., earning two top-six finishes against 14 boats in the open eight competition.
“I'm pleased that we were able to boat two crews that raced within 30 seconds of one another and placed in the top half of the field,” coach Jimmy King says. “Their results are indicative of the depth that we're working to build-up within our program.”
The team ‘A’ boat of Stephanie Roof, Jenelle Spencer, Brett Krumholz, Rachel Viglianco, Shannon Gribbons, Kaitlyn Brownson, Caroline Rettig, Kimberly Benda and coxswain, Amanda Mahasky, finished in third place with a time of 00:15:35, winning the bronze medal.
Brownson, who was injured last December, returned to WVU this fall and was a great contributor to her team’s performance.
“I commend Kate on the effort and progress she has made to not only return to WVU, but to her team in competitive form,” King adds.
Also racing in the open eight was the team ‘B’ boat, which took sixth in the competition with a time of 00:16:02.
Due to inclement weather conditions, there was a delay in results posted to regatta’s website and the remaining competitions of the day were canceled.
The Mountaineers will continue to compete Oct. 10, in Morgantown, W.Va., at the Head of the Mon.
