Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Cardinals

Louisville, Ky. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Louisville this afternoon at Cardinal Arena in Louisville, Ky.
The Cardinals (9-6, 2-0) defeated the Mountaineers (11-7, 1-2) in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) match.
Louisville started the match with a dominating performance in set one, as it posted 14 kills and four team blocks. Down 15-22, the Mountaineers went on a late set run after a kill from sophomore outside hitter Kylie Armbruster and two-straight service aces from sophomore setter Kari Post to bring the score to 19-22. The Cardinals then rebounded with kills from Lecia Brown and Justine Landi to win the set.
WVU jumped to an early 3-1 lead in set two after back-to-back kills from Armbruster and junior middle blocker Lauren Evans. However, Louisville came back to regain the lead for the rest of the set after a 7-0 run fueled by serving from Lola Arslanbekova, as she posted two service aces.
The Mountaineers started the third set with a 3-0 lead before the Cardinals returned with another 7-0 run as they went on to win the match.
Despite the loss, Evans and Armbruster led the Mountaineers with seven kills each, while freshman Stephanie Mock led with nine digs.
The Mountaineers conclude play this weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
