MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University's top tennis players, senior Stephanie LaFortune and reshirt junior Monique Burton, finished day two of the ITA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va.
The pair started the day with an 8-6 win in the doubles competition over Howard's Brittney Morgan and Alyssa Works, which put them through to the next round.
"We brought them here to show what they can do in the doubles competition and I'm glad to see them progress after playing such a solid team," says coach Marc Walters.
In the singles competition, Burton was defeated by Viginia Commonwealth's Alex Bara in a 6-0, 6-1, match. After the withdraw of another player, LaFortune was given a chance to compete in the main singles draw, but fell 6-1, 6-2, to Virginia's Erin Vierra.
"Despite some losses, the girls have been able to get a lot of playing time down here," adds Walters. "This weekend has been a great opportunity for both of them."
The duo will continue competing Sunday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. in the doubles competition against UVA's No. 4 seed, Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra.
