MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University selected player quotes from Tuesday interviews.
Geno Smith
My mom was always tough on me and has the tough love down pat. I appreciate that from her, it made me what I am today. She always tells me about the little things and that can’t be too successful for it. I know she is very happy and pleased with everything I do, she just wants me to be better.
You have that sense of knowing that you may start, but at the same time, being a backup quarterback you’re always one play away. You always have to prepare yourself as a starter.
The reps are pretty much the same every week. Jarrett didn’t practice on Sunday, because of his injury, but it is all pretty much the same. I took reps with the two’s today.
I knew of (Jasper Howard), I actually had a good friend that attended high school with him, and they used to tell me good stories about him. It was a tragic accident that happened.
I am pretty sure they (Connecticut) are going to come in and play off emotions. Playing off emotions alone, they are going to make a lot of plays and we have to withstand that and execute.
J.T. Thomas
That is the staple of our defense, trying to stop the run and make guys pass the ball to make their team more one dimensional. That has always been our goal here at West Virginia, stop the run first and make them pass the ball.
I faced (Andre) Dixon when he was a freshman. He was a lot smaller then, now he is thicker and runs more tough and between the tackles. No. 23 (Jordan Todman) is more of a speed guy. The key guy this year is going to be Dixon.
It was good to get the ball out a lot this past weekend. We try to get the ball out all of the time, but it was good to get a couple of bounces our way this weekend and help out the offense.
Connecticut has always had good athletes, some more recognized than others. When you look back and see how many draft picks they have had in the past, you see they have NFL caliber players. You have to respect that and respect the fact that they are a BIG EAST team and are always a challenge.
They are going to use the death of Jasper Howard as a motivational tool. We also feel for the UConn family, but we need to go out and win a football game.
Sidney Glover
We are doing just doing different coverages and trying to be over the top sometimes to take the pressure off the corners. It disguises them and helps them out too. I think everyone, the safeties and corners are all working together in disguising and not showing our hand too early.
No matter how much older we are, and with a year more of experience, after a few more games we get a better feel for each other and working together. We have played six games so far and after working hard every day, we all just get a better feel.
I think I am improving daily. I critique myself after each game and try to work on myself. I talk to my coaches a lot and even though they think I am hard-headed, I really do listen. I try to correct and make changes to the things that they want me to do, without them having to tell me. I haven’t reached where I want to be at yet, and I want to continue to keep getting better.
