MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A day after he earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors and was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the week, West Virginia University men’s soccer player Zach Johnson was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week, the California-based publication announced today.
Johnson, a redshirt junior goalkeeper, is in the middle of another stellar year. He registered 16 saves in the past two games, including eight against then-No. 22-ranked Notre Dame. He recorded his eighth shutout of the season, 29th of his career, which moves him into sole possession of second place in the WVU record book for career shutouts.
The Lumberton, N.J., native has started all 13 games in net, allowing just seven goals and stopping 47 shots. Johnson’s 0.49 goals-against average ranks him eighth nationally, and his 0.870 save percentage is 12th-best among all Division I goalkeepers.
Johnson needs only 59 minutes to move past Jon Capon (1978-81; 5,235 minutes) in second place on the school’s career goalkeeper minutes list.
WVU returns to action to play its final non-conference match at No. 25/23-ranked Ohio State on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Kickoff at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m.
