MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set for its first BIG EAST road trip of the season, with a 2 p.m. match at Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 3, and a 2 p.m. match at Cincinnati on Sunday, Oct. 3.
The Mountaineers improved to 11-6 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, after capturing their first conference win over Marquette (3-2), in their first league win since 2007.
WVU had three players record double digit kills in the win over the Golden Eagles as junior Lauren Evans and sophomore Kylie Armbruster posted 16 kills a piece and senior Abby Raines landed 10. Sophomore setter Kari Post also had a good match with a season-high 58 assists.
The Cardinals enter Saturday’s match with an 8-6, 1-1 record, after falling to Tennessee (2-3) on Wednesday. Despite the loss, freshman outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova led the team with 21 kills. The Mountaineers are looking for the first-ever win over the Cardinals, who own a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series record, after a 3-0 victory in Morgantown last season.
Cincinnati is 10-7, 1-0, on the season, despite falling to Dayton (3-1) on Tuesday. Junior Stephanie Niemer led the team with 22 kills and 13 digs. Niemer currently ranks second in the conference in kills per set with 4.75 and points per set (5.38). Last season, the Bearcats defeated the Mountaineers 3-0 in Morgantown to give them a 9-2 lead in the all-time record.
