MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior goalkeeper Zach Johnson earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors and was named to the CollegeSoccerNews National Team of the Week for his performances against Elon and Notre Dame, it was announced today.
It is the third time in his career that Johnson has been named the league’s goalkeeper of the week – second this season – and second time he has been named to CollegeSoccerNews’ National Team of the Week.
A Lumberton, N.J., native, Johnson totaled 16 saves and allowed only one goal in 200 minutes of action between the posts. He lowered his goals-against average to 0.49 on the season and boosted his save percentage to 0.870.
In WVU’s most recent match, Johnson registered eight saves at 22nd-ranked Notre Dame on Oct. 17. He earned his eighth shutout of the season and 29th of his career, moving him into sole possession of second place in the WVU annals for career shutouts.
At home on Oct. 14 against Elon, Johnson made eight saves against an offensive-minded Phoenix squad, playing all 110 minutes in the tie.
Sophomore Alex Silva was named to the league’s weekly honor roll for his game-winning goal at Notre Dame. Silva leads the team in goals (3) and points (7).
The Mountaineers return to action in their final non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Ohio State. Kickoff at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but has been moved to 5:30 p.m.
