Notre Dame Match Notes
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will resume BIG EAST action, as the team heads to No. 22-ranked Notre Dame for a match on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff at Alumni Stadium is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-1 double-overtime tie to Elon on Oct. 14 at home. Sophomore Ruben Garrido tallied his first career goal in the 47th minute on a cross from freshman Abel “Shadow” Sebele. However, the game was tied with less than two minutes remaining in regulation on a WVU own goal. The Mountaineers finished the game with 17 shots and held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-6.
WVU, unbeaten in its last seven matches, owns a 5-2-5 overall record, including a 4-1-2 mark in league action.
Sophomore Alex Silva leads the team with two goals, while Sebele has a team-leading six points through 12 contests. The Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, native also is first on the team in assists (4), shots (31) and shots on-goal (9).
Between the posts, redshirt junior Zach Johnson owns seven clean sheets. He has allowed only seven goals, while making 39 saves, and boasts a 0.52 goals-against average mark.
Notre Dame enters the match with a 7-5-1 overall record, going 5-2-0 in BIG EAST play.
Last time out, the Fighting Irish dropped a 3-0 decision to then-19th-ranked Indiana on Oct. 14. Notre Dame recorded nine shots and six corner kicks in the match. Jeb Brovsky and Bright Dike led the team with two shots apiece. Andrew Quinn made three saves in the loss.
Offensively, Dike leads the squad with eight goals and 18 points. He also holds the team lead in shots (32) and shots on-goal (18). Michael Thomas is second on the team with 12 points (4 g, 4 a) on 29 shots, 14 of which were on-goal.
In goal, Notre Dame has utilized Philip Tuttle and Quinn. Tuttle has played in eight games, allowing five goals and making 16 saves. Quinn, who has played in seven matches, has allowed eight goals, while making 23 saves.
The Fighting Irish are under the direction of Bobby Clark, who is in his ninth season with the program. He owns a 113-50-23 overall record. Notre Dame returns eight of its starters from the 2008 squad, which went 12-7-2, 7-2-2 in league action, and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
