MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior right-hander Jarryd Summers struck out seven in 4.2 shutout innings to lead the Gold team to a 4-2 victory over the Blue team in game one of the Gold-Blue World Series on Tuesday evening at Hawley Field.
The 2009 all-BIG EAST first team pitcher showed command throughout the night, picking up where he left off as one of the conference’s most formidable throwers. He was aided by hitters Brady Wilson, Mark Dvoroznak, Colin Durborow and Humberto Melendez – each producing multi-hit efforts.
Dvoroznak led the Gold squad with three hits, while Durborow, catcher Matt Malloy, Grant Buckner and Chris Enourato each added an RBI. Jedd Gyorko and junior college transfer Dom Hayes each led the Blue team with two hits apiece.
The Gold team started off the game with two runs in the first inning. Wilson led off with a single to left field, then advanced to second base on a single from Dvoroznak. Buckner then laced an RBI single through the left side, and cleanup batter Durborow drove in another run with a sharp single through the left side.
Enourato, starting as the Gold team’s first baseman, hit a line drive run-scoring single in the top of the fourth to give his squad a 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Gold team tacked on its fourth and final run. With runners on first and second base, Malloy hit a fly ball to the warning track in center field to Clark Sambuco, who made a diving grab to rob Malloy of an extra base hit. After watching Sambuco come up gingerly following the catch, Dvoroznak hustled from second base and scored to help the Gold put the game out of reach.
The Blue team responded with two runs in the eighth inning. With runners on first and third base, outfielder Jeremy Gum hit a slow-roller to pitcher Andy Altemus, whose throw to home plate was not in time to get Gyorko, making it 4-1. Knight then hit a run-scoring bloop single to center field to cut the deficit to 4-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Blue squad made one more comeback attempt. Hayes, who was on first base following a leadoff bunt single, attempted to score with one out on Gyorko’s double down the left field line. A pinpoint relay from left fielder Chris Rasky to Durborow to catcher Malloy gunned down Hayes at home plate, providing the game’s biggest defensive play of the evening.
The Gold-Blue World Series continues on Thursday with game two at Hawley Field. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
