Lewis Named WVU Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore women’s soccer player Meghan Lewis has been named West Virginia University’s athlete of the week for her play over the weekend in WVU’s seventh and eighth shutouts of the season.
Lewis, a Naperville, Ill., native, got into the attack to attempt three shots in the two matches, including her first collegiate goal in an upset win over 11th-ranked St. John’s on Sunday.
She was part of a defense that limited Syracuse’s starting forwards to two shots and the Red Storm’s starting forwards to one shot over the weekend. The defender logged all 180 minutes and is the only Mountaineer to play every single minute this season.

The No. 3 West Virginia University cross country team is set to return to action on Oct. 16, with a trip to the Penn State National Invitational in College Park, Pa.

The Mountaineers received their highest-ever ranking in school history last weekend, as they were No. 3 in the polls, announced by United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The reigning national champion Mountaineers (2-0, 1-0 GARC) opened defense of their 14th title with two wins over the weekend … WVU defeated Air Force 4655-4587 on Oct. 10, and Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) foe Nebraska, 4660-4634, on Oct. 11 … both matches were in Lincoln, Neb. … redshirt senior Bryant Wallizer paced WVU against the Falcons, finishing first overall with a score of 1167, and winning air rifle with a score of 590 … junior Andy Lamson tied the Falcons’ Tom Chandler for second place with a score of 1163 … Lamson’s classmate, Tommy Santelli, finished third with a score of 1162 … though sophomore Michael Kulbacki did not count towards the team’s smallbore score, his combined score of 1167 tied with Wallizer for first place … WVU secured the top five air rifle finishes … Lamson nabbed the highest WVU smallbore finish, shooting 579 and finishing second to Chandler (582) … Kulbacki tied the Falcons’ Nick Krieger for third (578) … Lamson and junior Kyle Smith finished with match-best 1168 combined scores against Nebraska … Kulbacki finished behind the pair with an aggregate score of 1164, while Santelli shot 1163 … sophomore Justin Pentz and Smith finished first and second in air rifle with respective personal-best scores of 589 and 588 ...
