MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team plays its 20th annual Gold-Blue World Series beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 4:30 p.m. at Hawley Field.
The three-game series continues on Thursday and Friday, with first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. in both contests.
“Our coaching staff and players are really looking forward to this year’s Gold-Blue series,” coach Greg Van Zant said. “We had our annual draft on Sunday night and both teams look evenly matched. It should be very competitive and a good series to watch.”
The blue squad is captained by senior left-hander Steve Morrison, and coached by second-year assistant Tad Reida. The gold team will be headed by senior reliever Chris Enourato, with six-year assistant Pat Sherald coaching the squad.
Last season, the blue team swept the three-game series, winning by scores of 15-13, 7-6 and 6-5.
WVU returns four of its record-setting nine all-BIG EAST performers in 2009. Junior Jedd Gyorko, who batted .421 with eight home runs and 58 RBIs last year, headlines a strong group of returnees.
Third baseman Dan DiBartolomeo comes back for his junior season after hitting a school-record .439 with eight home runs and 59 RBIs in 2009. All-BIG EAST first team pitcher Jarryd Summers also begins his junior year after finishing last season atop the conference in strikeouts, runs allowed, innings pitched, games started and opposing batting average.
Rounding out the group is Enourato, who enters his senior year as the school’s all-time saves leader with 17.
The Mountaineers finished last season with a 37-18 overall record, including a 17-10 mark in BIG EAST play. WVU’s 37 victories were its most in a single season since going 37-17-1 in 1998.
