MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In one of the more exciting meets of the year and the last home meet for eight seniors, the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams split dual meets with Maryland this afternoon in the WVU Natatorium.
“It was a great way to end our home meet schedule with it being senior day,” Coach Vic Riggs says. “I think we competed very well today and we improved on some of our areas from last week.”
The men defeated Maryland, 147-84, while the women fell by a close margin to the Terrapins, 134-103. Overall, there were three pool records broken.
“Our 200 medley relays swam exceptionally well, both breaking pool records,” Riggs says. ”I thought we were finishing our races much better than last week.”
The men (4-9) started off with a first-place finish in a pool-record time of 1:32.20 in the 200 medley relay. Seniors Michael Walker, Pablo Marmolejo, Payton Brooks and junior George Farquhar combined for the time.
Following the 200 medley relay win, West Virginia won the first two individual events of the day when junior Justin Galbreath won the 1,000 free in 9:42.76 and freshman Taylor Camp won the 200 free in 1:42.17. Two events later, the Mountaineers earned a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM, with Walker leading the way with a first-place time of 1:51.44 and Marmolejo coming second with a 1:53.87 finish.
Following Walker’s win in the 200 IM, Marmolejo took the 100 fly, finishing with a time of 49.66. Freshman Martin Vanis finished in second place, stopping the clock at 51.84.
Walker struck first place again shortly after with a first-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 51.06. Junior Tim Field finished in a close margin for second place at 52.37.
Galbreath struck first again in the 500 free, winning the event in 4:42.70 in a tight race against a few Maryland opponents.
Freshman Brad Eichenseer and Brooks also had successful days in the 50 and 100 free. Eichenseer finished second with a time of 21.42, while Brooks placed third finishing in 21.61. In the 100 free, Eichenseer finished second again at 47.28, with Brooks placing fourth at 47.74. Farquhar also swam in the 100 breast where he finished in a close second place at 57.59.
To finish the day for the men the 200 free relay made up of Eichenseer, Camp, senior Nathan Farmer and freshman Kevin Anderson finished in second place at 1:26.82.
The women (4-10) began the meet with a pool record in the 200 medley relay as well with senior Isabel Perez and juniors Morgan Callaway, Stephanie Shupe and Kayla Andrews finishing at 1:45.71.
The women continued to see success, winning the following three events starting with the 1,000 free in which senior Lindsey Largo swept the competition by 25 seconds, finishing in 10:15.60.
Callaway followed Largo’s performance with a win in the 200 free finishing in 1:51.42. Junior Shaunna Purtell placed third in the same event in 1:53.06.
Andrews set the last pool record of the day finishing the 50 free at 23.25. Senior Maritza Paredes finished in fourth in the 50 free at 24.60.
Andrews posted another win in the 100 free at 50.01. She has yet to lose a 100 free race this season in dual meets.
Callaway earned her second win of the day in one of her signature events the 100 back, stopping the clock at 57.22.
In Largo’s second swim of the day she finished in first place in the 500 free at 5:01.63. Junior Shaunna Purtell also swam in the event finishing in second at 5:07.47.
Perez had two third-place finishes on the day in the 100 breast and 200 IM finishing at 1:08.28 and 2:11.34, respectively.
In the diving well, West Virginia’s senior Brandon Robinson and freshman Matt O’Neill split first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Robinson scored 316.50 off the 3-meter board, good for first place. Off the 1-meter, O’Neill notched a score of 248.10. O’Neill earned 264.45 points on the 3-meter board for a second-place finish and Robinson finished second in the 1-meter board with 247.65.

“I look forward to us continuing to prepare for the BIG EAST Championships,” Riggs says. “I am also excited for next week’s opportunity to swim against Ohio State.”
Both West Virginia squads will return to action next week for their final dual meet competition before the BIG EAST Championships. On Friday, Feb. 6, the West Virginia will travel to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at 5 p.m.
