MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team is set to play host to James Madison on Friday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m. and Richmond on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3:30 p.m., at the Greenbrier Hotel and Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to play at a prestigious and historical venue like the Greenbrier,” Coach Marc Walters says. “Our girls are eager about it and have a lot of energy, despite of the results from last weekend.”
Despite falling to 0-2 last weekend, the Mountaineers saw several bright moments as the newcomer pair of Olga Elkin and Veronica Cardenas went undefeated in No. 3 doubles play. In the Akron match, the pair defeated Jeremie Benjamin and Kerry Langworthy, 8-5. Then against nationally ranked Marshall, Elkin and Cardenas defeated Kristina Koprcina and Catherine Kellner, 8-4.
In singles play, Cardenas captured the only win of the weekend as she took down Benjamin in a hard fought 6-2, 6-7 (6) 10-5 match.
The Spiders opened their season 1-1 after falling to Wake Forest 6-1, then defeating Dartmouth 5-3 last weekend. Senior Ashlee Vosters leads the team with a 2-0 record in singles play.
This will mark the Dukes’ first match of the spring season. JMU finished the fall season with three players making appearances at the ITA East Region Championships. Rebecca Erickson and Kristin Nimitz competed in doubles, while freshman Kinsey Pate captured a win in the first round of singes.
