MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team dropped its first match of the season to Akron, 5-2, this evening at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“It is obviously disappointing for our team to not come out and play as well as we could,” Coach Marc Walters says. “We are a young team and we played well, but in the end we could not close it out.”
Despite dropping the match, the Mountaineers took the doubles point as Stephanie LaFortune and Monique Burton defeated Akron’s Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Carolina Castro at the No. 2 spot with a 9-7 score. Newcomers Olga Elkin and Veronica Cardenas also saw a win in the No. 3 doubles spot as they defeated Jeremie Benjamin and Kerry Langworthy, 8-5.
“I am happy with the way that we closed out doubles,” Walters says. “As far as the team getting better, this is what we needed so that we can see what has to be worked on.”
In the singles competition, the Mountaineers’ lone win came from Cardenas as she defeated Benjamin in a hard fought 6-2, 6-7 (6) 10-5 match.
“Akron is a much improved team,” Walters says. “They have two top 100 players added to their line-up right now and their power is at the top.”
The Mountaineers continue play with a match against in-state rival Marshall at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
