MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - For the third consecutive season, the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will travel to Notre Dame, Ind., to partake in the Shamrock Invitational. The invite is hosted by Notre Dame and will also include Denver and Michigan State. The two-day event will kick off on Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. and then will start again on Saturday, Jan. 24, with two sessions. The first session will start at 10 a.m. with the second session starting at 5 p.m.
“This is a good opportunity to race in BIG EAST Championships format and give our kids an opportunity to focus in on the events that they’ll be swimming there,” Coach Vic Riggs says. “As a coaching staff, this is an opportunity to assess what we need to do to succeed in the championship part of our season.”
For West Virginia (men 3-6, women 3-7) this will be the first action the squads have seen since they swam against rival Pitt in a dual meet on Jan. 10. That meet saw the men fall closely to the Panthers 155.5-144.5, while the women were defeated, 166.5-131.5.
Notre Dame (men 3-6, women 3-2) comes into the meet with the men last in action against Northwestern on Jan. 16, and Oakland on Jan. 17. Both meets resulted in a loss, while the women last to nationally ranked Louisville on Jan. 17.
This will be the second time this season West Virginia has battled Denver (men 7-1, women 5-3) as both teams took part in the Georgia Invitational. The Denver men finished in third place, while the women placed fourth. West Virginia, who had to leave early from the invite, saw the men place fifth while the women finished sixth.
Michigan State (men 2-2, women 3-4) have most recently competed against Purdue in which both the men and women were both defeated.
West Virginia will have two more dual meets to finish out the season before heading to Indianapolis, Ind., to swim in the BIG EAST Championships.
