Epiphanny Prince scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead No. 21 Rutgers to a 60-44 victory over West Virginia Tuesday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J.
Prince shot 9 of 14 from the floor, handed out two assists and made two steals for the Scarlet Knights, now 11-5, 3-2.
“She’s a great player; she can score and gets some big shots at the end of the shot clock,” said West Virginia coach Mike Carey.
Khadijah Rushdan added 12 points and four rebounds for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights shot 50 percent for the game (21 of 42) and had a 33-24 edge on the glass to overcome 18 turnovers.
West Virginia, which upset Rutgers last year in Morgantown, got 13 points from Takisha Granberry and 10 from Sarah Miles.
The Mountaineers suffered through a 3 of 20 first-half shooting performance before improving their marksmanship in the second half.
“In the first half you can’t shoot 15 percent and be in the game,” said Carey. “We had some wide open shots and we were kind of timid when we went inside. They took a lot of balls out of our hand. They were more aggressive and physical than we were.”
West Virginia was outscored just 28-26 in the second half.
“I thought in the second half we did a lot better job of attacking them and we did some things offensively,” Carey said.
Carey admits he is worried about his undermanned team beginning to wear down.
“You have to play with what you’ve got – it is what it is,” said Carey. “But I give our girls a lot of credit. We’re going to battle you and we’re going to play hard.
“We just don’t have the bench to bring players in to get them rest. We’ve lost a couple of conference games during the last four minutes because we are playing everyone so many minutes,” said Carey. “We miss easy shots and don’t defend like we normally do because they aren’t getting the proper rest.”
The Mountaineers’ record falls to 11-7 overall and 0-5 in Big East play. WVU will try and get its first Big East victory on Saturday in Morgantown against St. John’s in a 2 pm game that will be televised on the Big East Television Network.
