MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three West Virginia University women’s soccer players have been named Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Seniors Lisa DuCote, Kelsey Fowler and Robin Rushton, each were honored for their academic prowess. Teammate Deana Everrett was selected to the Scholar All-East Region Second Team by the NSCAA earlier this month.
DuCote, a midfielder from Fredericksburg, Va., completed undergraduate work in May, 2008 in exercise physiology and is currently working on master’s degree in the same discipline. A 2008 WVU Foundation Outstanding Senior Award winner, DuCote was named a Scholar Honorable Mention pick last season as well.
Fowler, a first-year starter at center back from Wheeling, W.Va., is an exercise physiology major. Fowler, a Soccer America and BIG EAST Player of the Week recipient this season, helped the 2008 Mountaineer defense tie the school record with 13 shutouts.
Rushton, a four-year starter at outside back from Scarborough, Ontario, is a political science major. Rushton, also named a Scholar Honorable Mention pick for the second-straight year, has helped WVU teams post 48 shutouts the last four years.
The Mountaineers closed out the 2008 season with a 14-3-6 record, tying the school record for fewest losses in a season. West Virginia finished the season with a final ranking of 14th by the NSCAA and won its third-straight BIG EAST American Division title.
The WVU women’s soccer team also earned a Team Ethics Award for sportsmanship. West Virginia, a Bronze level winner, is one of 10 NCAA Division I teams to claim an ethics award, given to teams that accumulated no red cards and a maximum of 10 yellow cards throughout the season.
The Team Ethics Award recognizes teams “that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the Laws of the Game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.”
