VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova got a pair of free throws from Laura Kurz with five seconds left to defeat West Virginia 54-52 Saturday afternoon in a Big East Conference women's basketball action at the Pavilion.
The Wildcats (10-7, 2-2) overcame a 10-point West Virginia halftime lead by holding the Mountaineers to just 18 second-half points.
West Virginia (11-6, 0-4) shot just 31.8 percent from the floor and was 1 of 6 from the free throw line in the second half to drop to 0-4 in conference play.
The Mountaineers led 44-35 with 9:51 remaining in the game following a jumper by Ashley Powell. The Wildcats were able to retake the lead by making three 3-pointers and going 6 of 6 from the foul line down the stretch.
Laura Kurz led Villanova with a game-high 17 points. The forward also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
West Virginia got 16 points from Takisha Granberry, 11 from Liz Repella and 10 from Sarah Miles.
The Mountaineers shot 40.8 percent for the game and were beaten 30-28 on the glass.
WVU is now 0-12 in games played at Villanova.
West Virginia remains on the road to face Rutgers Tuesday night in a 7:30 pm Big East game in Piscataway.
