MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2 WVU rifle team knocked off the rust and resumed its season with a 4650-4622 victory over GARC foe, No. 16 Nebraska, this evening at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers (7-1 overall, 4-1 GARC) defeated the Cornhuskers in smallbore, 2304-2293, and in air rifle, 2346-2329.
With the victory, WVU evens its series with Nebraska, 3-3.
“This is a decent team score for us, and we performed well in air rifle, but we need to perform better in smallbore as the season progresses,” says Coach Jon Hammond. “Overall, I’m happy with the win and am excited to keep working and getting better in the next few matches.”
Sophomore Tommy Santelli finished with 1162 aggregate points, the best WVU combined score. The Prosperity, Pa., native finished fourth in smallbore and air rifle with 576 and 586 points, respectively.
Nebraska’s Ryann McGough finished first overall with 1172 combined points. McGough nabbed the best smallbore score with 588 points, and took sixth in air rifle with 584 points.
Sophomore Brandi Eskew led the Mountaineers in smallbore with 581 points, while classmate Kyle Smith finished second on the team with 580 points.
Junior Bryant Wallizer finished first in air rifle with 590 points, his second-best score of the season and one point short of his personal-best. Freshman Michael Kulbacki took second place with 588 points.
“I’m happy with the way Bryant performed in air rifle,” Hammond says. “He started out a bit rough, but was able to break and regroup and earn a solid score.”
The Mountaineers next welcome No. 18 NC State on Sunday, Jan. 18. The match is set to begin at 8 a.m. at the WVU Rifle Range. Fans are encouraged to attend throughout the day, as competition plays in to the afternoon.
