CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Sarah Miles scored 23 points and Takisha Granberry added 17 to lead West Virginia to a 74-65 victory over Marshall in the 2009 Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic Wednesday night at the Civic Center in Charleston, W.Va.
The Mountaineers (11-5) had to step outside of conference play to stop their season-long three-game losing streak.
There were eight lead changes in the first half and Marshall led 50-47 before six straight points by Miles gave West Virginia a 53-50 lead. The Mountaineers built their lead to five, 63-58, after a Liz Repella three-point play with 3:29 remaining.
Rashedah Henriques made a 3 from the wing to pull Marshall to within two, 63-61, and Tynikki Crook tied the game with her game-high 24th point.
That led to a key stretch for the Mountaineers with 1:53 remaining. Takisha Granberry was fouled making a short jumper and her missed free throw try was rebounded by Cynthia Fullard.
Fullard got the ball back out to the top of the key to Granberry, who fired a pass to a cutting Dominique Dixon for a lay up to put the Mountaineers ahead, 67-63. Dixon was fouled on the play and her missed free throw was once again retrieved by the Mountaineers.
After a WVU timeout with 1:43 remaining and a held ball that gave the possession back to West Virginia, Ashley Powell hit a deep 3 with three seconds left on the shot clock to give the Mountaineers a seven-point lead, 70-63.
West Virginia made 25 of 53 overall from the floor for 47.2 percent. The Mountaineers were 7 of 15 from behind the 3-point arc and made 17 of 25 from the free throw line.
Liz Repella contributed 14 points and Ashley Powell scored 12 points and handed out five assists.
Crook led all scorers with 24 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds. Chantelle Handy added 12 for Marshall, which drops to 9-7.
Marshall shot 50 percent for the game (24 of 48) and had a 35-25 advantage over the smaller Mountaineers on the glass. The Thundering Herd committed 22 turnovers.
Miles and Crooks were named game MVPs.
West Virginia has won four straight against Marshall and improves to 32-5 overall against the Thundering Herd. It was the Mountaineers’ 1,000th game in program history.
West Virginia resumes Big East action on Saturday at Villanova in a game that will tip off at 2 pm.
