Women's Soccer: Two Pick Up Weekly Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer players Greer Barnes and Deana Everrett were honored today for their weekend play at the First Tennessee Lady Vols Classic.
Barnes was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Everrett was named to the 11-person TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.
Barnes, a Rye, N.Y., native helped the Mountaineer defense record its third shutout of the season in the two-game tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. Barnes logged all 200 minutes of action and was named to the All-Tournament Team and the Defensive MVP.
The senior defender took a game-high three shots in WVU’s win 1-0 over No. 20 Tennessee. Barnes and her teammates kept the Lady Vols off the scoreboard and held two-time SEC Player of the Year Kylee Rossie to one shot on goal.
In WVU’s second game of the tournament, Barnes totaled three shots against Washington State. She also held U-20 national team player Kiersten Dallstream to one shot on-goal in the 1-1 draw.
The weekly conference honor is the first of the season for WVU. Other BIG EAST award winners were Notre Dame’s Kelsey Lysander (Goalkeeper) and Brittany Bock (Offensive), Villanova’s Kaitlin Ryan (Rookie).
Everrett earned her first weekly award of 2008 for her stellar play over the weekend. The senior forward was named to the All-Tournament Team and the weekend’s Overall MVP.
The Oakville, Ontario, native scored her second goal of the season against Washington State and finished with six shots against the Cougars. The goal pushed her career total to 34 – tying Ashley Banks for third place all-time on WVU’s career goals list.
West Virginia returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 11, with a live broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel against Kentucky. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
