MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team closed out the Bronco Invitational today at Western Michigan, with several key wins.
"I am pleased we bounced back Saturday and Sunday after a rough start on Friday. We were better each day and held up great physically, so the girls who played the best Sunday were the ones with our best physical recovery,” says Head Coach Marc Walters. “Gabriela (Blaskovicova) and Olga (Elkin) both had good Sunday wins and our doubles got better with each match. We should grow from the good competition and look to go deeper in our next draws at Cincinnati."
Junior Gabriela Blaskovicova led the way for the Mountaineers as she took first place in the consolation round of the Flight ‘C’ draw, after defeating Kay Kay Magi from Purdue in a 7-6, 7-5 match. Blaskovicova won her final three matches of the event to finish the weekend with a 3-1 record.
Also having singles success on Sunday were juniors Olga Elkin and Stephanie LaFortune. Elkin saved three match points before taking a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 12-10 win over Gilly Hush of Marquette. LaFortune defeated Jan Woo of Eastern Michigan, 7-5, 6-2.
In the doubles competition, Elkin along with freshman Veronica Cardenas posted key wins over Eastern Michigan (8-1) and Western Michigan (8-4), in the consolation round.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Oct. 3-5, as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for the Queen City Invitational.
