September 27, 2008 Today’s game captains for West Virginia were Mike Dent, Tito Gonzales, Adam Hughes and Ellis Lankster. Coach Bill Stewart selects game captains each week. Team captains will be elected at the end of the season.
Robert Sands was WVU’s lone first-time starter against Marshall. Brandon Hogan made his first career start on defense. Hogan started two games last season at wide receiver. The Mountaineers now have a total of 36 players with at least one game of starting experience. Tops on that list are Ryan Stanchek (38), Pat White (34), Greg Isdaner (29) and Jake Figner (29).
Noel Devine’s four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was his first of the season. The touchdown was WVU’s third-straight rushing touchdown.
Dorrell Jalloh’s 21-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter was Jalloh’s third career touchdown and first since the Western Michigan game last season.
The touchdown pass from White to Jalloh was White’s 41st career touchdown pass, tying him with Major Harris on WVU’s career touchdown pass list. Marc Bulger is WVU’s all-time leader with 59 career touchdown passes. White then passed Harris for fifth place in the third quarter with a five-yard touchdown pass to Jock Sanders.
Mortty Ivy’s interception in the second quarter was his second of the season and third of his career. It marked WVU’s fourth interception of the season.
Jock Sanders’ five-yard touchdown reception was his third receiving touchdown of the season and also the third of his career.
Pat White has thrown at least two touchdown passes in 14 career games, including 11 of his last 20 games. WVU is 12-2 when White throws two touchdown passes in a game.
Devine went over 100 yards rushing for the second game in a row and fifth time during his career.
With Pat McAfee’s 39-yard field goal in the third quarter, he moved into fourth place in career BIG EAST scoring, tying Art Carmody from Louisville who had 320 points from 2005-07.
West Virginia’s defense has not allowed a touchdown in seven consecutive quarters dating back to last Thursday night’s 17-14 overtime loss at Colorado. WVU has surrendered just six points during that span.
West Virginia improved to 8-0 all-time against Marshall. West Virginia has won all three Friends of Coal Bowl meetings.
WVU is now 35-7 over the last 42 games.
WVU has won 47 of its last 57 regular-season games, and WVU has won 50 of 62 overall games.
Dating back to 2005, WVU has 123 rushing touchdowns in its last 36 games.
WVU is 28-6 with Pat White as the starting quarterback.
WVU is 45-2 since 2002 when winning the turnover battle.
WVU has outrushed its opponents in 36 of 37 games. WVU’s record is 31-6 during that span.
West Virginia improved to 34-7-1 against current members of Conference USA.
