Volleyball: Mountaineers Win WVU Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Freshman setter Kari Post was named the tournament MVP as the Mountaineers took first place in the WVU Volleyball Classic this evening.
The Mountaineers (5-6) were named tournament champions, as they defeated George Washington (5-6) in a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11) match.
“We are very excited to win this tournament and to win three matches in a row,” says Head Coach Veronica Hammersmith. “We feel like this is a turning point for our team and we may be on our way to being more successful. This weekend was a hard battle with two five game matches, but the team held up well under pressure and I am very proud of them.”
Post led the Mountaineers in the win with 42 assists and a career-high 19 digs for her third straight double-double of the season. Over the weekend, Post recorded a total of 115 assist and 48 digs.
Junior defensive specialist Tamara De Angelis and sophomore libero Bonnie West were also named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. In their last match, West led the team in digs with 24, while De Angelis posted nine.
Leading the Mountaineers in kills was senior middle blocker Tammy Wolf, who posted a season-high 18 with a .516 hitting percentage. Senior Middle Blocker Lisa Hough and sophomore outside hitter Abby Norman followed with nine kills a piece.
As a team, the Mountaineers posted 55 total kills, 85 digs and eight total team blocks.
The Mountaineers will begin BIG EAST play next weekend as they travel to Seton Hall on Saturday, Sept. 27, and Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 28.
