MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- Freshman outside hitter Michelle Kopecky led West Virginia with a career-high 17 kills in helping the Mountaineers defeat UNC Greensboro in the first match of the WVU Classic Friday.
The Mountaineers moved to 3-6 on the season as they downed the Spartans (6-5) in a 3-2 (25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-3) match.
“I’m very please with the outcome of the match and especially with the fifth set. I thought it would be much closer but we took charge and it was important to finish off strong,” says Head Coach Veronica Hammersmith. “We had some kids playing for the first time with Michelle and Kari (Post) and they did very well. I thought we had a good hitting match and all around we played well. We had our ups and downs, but it was great for them to win this.”
In her first career start, Kopecky captured a .394 hitting percentage, four digs and a service ace. Also making her career debut was freshman setter Kari Post, who posted 44 assists and 17 digs for her first ever double-double.
Senior middle blocker Lisa Hough finished second on the team in kills with 11, while sophomore libero Bonnie West posted 20 digs.
Overall the Mountaineers had a fantastic showing with 58 total kills and a .231 hitting percentage. They also posted 73 total digs and five blocks.
The Mountaineers will continue play in the WVU Classic tomorrow with a 2:30 p.m. match against UMBC, followed by an 8 p.m. match against George Washington.
