Volleyball: WVU Classic Set to Begin Friday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to host the WVU Classic on Sept. 19-20, at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers will begin the tournament with a 7:30 p.m. match against UNC-Greensboro on Friday, Sept. 19. This will mark the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Mountaineers fell to 2-6 on the season after falling to Youngstown State and Marshall this past weekend. Despite the loss, freshman Kylie Armbruster continued her success by posting a career-high 21 kills in the Marshall match. She now has 92 kills and 80 digs on the season.
The Spartans fell to 6-4 on the season after falling to High Point in a 3-0 match, on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Junior Branagan Fuller led the team with 10 kills and nine digs. Fuller currently leads the team in kills with 109 this season.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers will meet up with UMBC in a 2:30 p.m. match, followed by an 8 p.m. match against George Washington.
The Retrievers moved to 8-3 on the season after going 3-0 at the NJIT Highlanders Challenge, in Newark, N.J., last weekend. Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Lang led the Retrievers with 31 kills as she was named the America East Volleyball Rookie of the Week, for the third consecutive week.
The Colonials hold a 5-2 record on the season after a 2-0 showing in the GW Invitational. Freshman setter Alyssa Valentine was named to the all-tournament team after posting 28 assists, 10 digs and a block assist over the weekend.
Other match-ups during the weekend include the tournament opener with George Washington and UMBC on Friday, at 5 p.m. In the first match on Saturday, UNC Greensboro will face George Washington at noon, then UMBC at 5:30 p.m.
